![]() ![]() Inner Liner: Helmets must have firm polystyrene foam liner approximately 1-inch thick lining the inside of the device. Sturdy, Riveted Chin Straps: Helmets must have a chin strap that is attached using sturdy rivets. Helmet Weight: Helmets meeting minimum requirements should weight approximately three pounds. Regulations provided by the Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration outline the following minimum requirements for motorcycle safety helmets: What kind of helmet satisfies the state’s helmet law? Vehicle Code Section 27802 explains that the state has the right to establish safety specifications and standards for all helmets “offered for sale, or sold, for use by drivers and passengers.”Īt the very least, these standards will comply with safety regulations established by the federal government. So, California requires all motorcyclists and passengers to wear a safety helmet. This helps to ensure that anyone who is vulnerable to suffering a catastrophic or fatal injury is protected. The law also extends beyond motorcycles, explicitly including all motorized bicycles and motor-driving cycles in its definition. It not only requires the person operating the motorcycle to wear a helmet, but also any passengers who are on the vehicle. California Requires All Riders to Wear a HelmetĬalifornia’s mandatory helmet law, as written in Vehicle Code Section 27803, states that it is “unlawful to operate a motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized bicycle if the driver or any passenger is not wearing a safety helmet.”Īs you can see, the state’s helmet law is rather broad. One year later, the number of motorcycle deaths reported in the state had dropped by a staggering 37.5 percent. It did not take long to see the positive effects of California’s mandatory helmet law. While many states with helmet laws limit helmet requirements to children and teenagers, California’s law mandates helmet use by everyone. In 1992, California became one of a few states to require anyone riding on a motorcycle or motorized bike to wear a helmet. Studies estimate that more than 700 motorcycle accident deaths could have been avoided if riders had been wearing helmets. In 2015, helmets were instrumental in saving more than 1,770 motorcyclists’ lives. The risk of death decreases by approximately 37 percent when a rider wears a safety helmet. According to the CDC, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of suffering a serious head injury in an accident by nearly 70 percent. Motorcyclists who wear helmets while riding are much less likely to suffer a catastrophic or fatal injury if they are involved in a crash. 6 What Happens If I Don’t Wear a Helmet in California?.3 California Requires All Riders to Wear a Helmet. These accidents can be prevented by closing the belay system, which can be done by: (1) Both climber and belayer tying into the rope (2) Placing a stopper knot on the end of the rope and/or (3) Tying the belayer’s end of the rope to an anchor or rope bag. This type of incident continues to be a problem at climbing areas across the country. It’s also possible that the method the climber used to thread the anchors for lowering used up significant amounts of rope. Although the precise circumstances are not known, ropes shrink with age, making it possible the climbers’ rope was shorter than believed. This route is about 100 feet high, so lowering with a 60-meter (197-foot) rope would provide no margin for error. ![]() Upon arriving at the hospital, the climber was diagnosed with a fractured temporal bone and cerebral hemorrhage in the back of his head. The patient was conscious when EMS arrived and complained of head pain. The belayer’s end of the rope slipped through the belay device before the climber reached the ground, precipitating the fall. Late in the afternoon on April 16, a male climber (28) was injured after falling approximately 20 feet to the ground in the Moore’s Wall Amphitheater while being lowered from the route Quaker State (5.11a).
